Tradition v. Modernity

… tradition represents the continuity of cultural values, beliefs, and practices passed down through generations, modernity embodies change, innovation, and progress …    From: sociology.institute/

Since 1837 a group of women in Annisquam have been helping their neighbors in times of adversity. Altho the process has evolved, the mission continues today. The Annisquam Sewing Circle was originally founded as the Annisquam Female Benevolent Society at the same time as the Village Church Bee. In the 1830s women in the United States were involved in many groups, including antislavery societies, literary societies and women’s suffrage groups. It appears the group in Annnisquam was more concerned with their neighbors. Before organized systems of aid, the primary support for widows and orphans came from extended family networks, community support and religious institutions that would provide for their needs based on cultural and religious practices assisting those who had lost their primary caregivers.

Today the Annisquam Sewing Circle serves the same purpose in a slightly different funding model. During the year fundraising events are held. The funds are distributed to Cape Ann organizations as designated by the members.

ASC Tea sandwichesYes, we still gather to hold the business meeting, discuss the events of the day and share a traditional Tea complete with Tea Sandwiches.

We appreciate the strong community support enabling the ASC to donate much-needed funds to groups like the Open Door, Pathways and the Grace Center.
